About Terry Carson
I came to furniture making through necessity. While working in tech finance, I bought my first home and quickly discovered that the furniture I wanted—pieces that fit my space, my style, and my standards—was either out of reach or didn’t exist. So I decided to make it myself.
This passion grew with time and eventually led me to leave my job and attend the summer furniture-making intensive at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, Maine. Equipped with this experience, I’m excited to be designing and building furniture in the city I’ve called home for the last decade. If you’re in the DC area and interested in collaborating, please be in touch.
Artist Statement
My work blends modern design with traditional influence. I focus on functional, well-crafted pieces made primarily from hand-selected wood. At the heart of every build is a commitment to quality and a respect for the materials—letting them guide the form as much as the function.
I want my furniture to feel like it belongs. Each piece is made by hand, tailored to the home or business it’s intended for, and created in close collaboration with the people who will live with it. That process—personal and intentional—is just as important to me as the finished work.
The name TulipOne is a tribute to my mother, who taught me that good design isn’t just about how something looks—it’s about how it shapes the way we live.
What sets my work apart is that it’s made not just to last, but to connect. I believe everyday objects can draw us closer to something greater—comfort, meaning, beauty. I’m currently developing a line of adaptable furniture: a consistent design language that can shift in scale and purpose while holding onto its essence. I’m also exploring collaborations with other makers who share a love of thoughtful design.
In every piece I build, I’m chasing a simple goal: to create furniture that helps people feel at home.
